The “Toys for the North” Toy Drive began in 2010 as a partnership between the Santa Claus Parade, the Canadian Toy Association and the R.C.M.P. Together we identified a huge need for holiday and Christmas toys for Canadian children in the most remote, far north communities in Nunavut, Yukon, the Northwest Territories and the northern reaches of the provinces.
The program has grown steadily from $50,000 the first year to $80,000 in toys last year delivered to more than 12,000 delighted children. We are optimistic that we will exceed last year’s total donation of new toys provided by member companies of the Canadian Toys Association, plus public contributions at drop boxes in southern Ontario R.C.M.P. offices and on Parade Day. We are also grateful for company donations of toys coming in from our friends at the Toronto Zoo.
This year’s toy delivery by R.C.M.P. detachment staff has been expanded to include communities in Newfoundland/Labrador, and northern Manitoba.
Together we can help grow this great program and let the children of Canada’s north know that people care about them! On the morning of Parade Day, bring an unwrapped toy to the CHFI booth at the Royal Ontario Museum (Bloor St. side). Your gift will be included in the Toys for the North shipments delivered to children in need in time for Christmas morning.
Watch for the Toys for the North float in the Parade with special guest The Hon. Leona Aglukkaq, MP for Nunavut and federal Minister of Health.
